Certified French Translator and Chartered Linguist in the UK
Certified French Medical Translations
I am a certified translator and chartered linguist. But what precisely does that mean?
In the UK, when someone needs a certified translation of a French document, it is necessary to use the services of a certified translator or translation agency. Whether you are a private individual needing a French birth certificate translated into English, or even a business or public authority needing a French document to be translated into English a certified by a professional this is something you will need.
In the UK, the Government requires French translators to provide written certification with certified translators confirming the following:
-
The name and address details of the translator;
-
Indication that the translation is a true and certified rendering of the original French document;
-
Indication of certification and/or qualification details.
Chartered Linguist
As well as being a certified translator, I am also a Chartered Linguist. What is the difference between a certified French translator and a chartered linguist?
In the UK, the CIOL (Chartered Institute of Linguists) is authorised to award the status of Chartered Linguist to anybody who has gained a high level of skill or qualification in their related field of work. Chartered Linguists should be educated to degree level in their non-native language – in my instance, French – and may also hold specialist qualifications in translation and/or interpreting – in my instance, a Master’s Degree in Professional Translation for French.
It is also necessary to have at least five years’ practical experience using French language skills within a related professional context.
Be sure to get a certificate with your certified translation
Whenever you have paid for a certified translation, the translator should always issue you with a certificate. As indicated above, this includes particular information and should be attached to the translated document. Whenever you present your certified translation to any authority in future, this will be valid.
Some translators and agencies will charge a little extra for the issue of a certified translation. Be sure to enquire before ordering to find out how much they will charge.

Quality Assurance in Certified Translations
Whenever a business, public authority or Government agency requires a certified French translation, they can be assured in the rigorous quality standards in force which are outlined neatly by the Chartered Institute of Linguists online at this address.
Each certified translator has to be properly vetted and can be audited by the Institute of Linguists to ensure that their qualifications and experience are constantly up to date.
